Meet an Occupational Therapist- Laurie Benavidez

Laurie was first introduced to occupational therapy as a child when her youngest brother was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and started receiving OT services. She remembers it looking like so much fun. She watched as her brother would use wooden knives and spoons to cut through wooden fruit held together by velcro. Reminiscing on these moments and knowing her strengths and talents, she then pursued her now love and passion for Occupational Therapy in Austin, TX. “I’m incredibly grateful to have found occupational therapy as my career. Occupational therapy is an incredibly creative and diverse career,” Laurie said.

Laurie has experience with inpatient rehab centers, pediatric clinics, schools, and home health, giving her skills working with a wide range of ages and abilities. Laurie added, “I love that OT allows me to break down any activity, even one I am not initially familiar with, in order to help others engage in their lives with activities that are important to them in an easy way- from children and families working on ADLs, to forming sustainable habits across a lifespan, to adults looking to improve their wellness, or helping those with therapeutic exercises post surgery or injury. I love being an OT!” During the pandemic, Laurie and her husband were able to also fulfill another dream of opening a wellness company, where they provide several online services for overall wellbeing.

Laura, who goes by “Laurie,” grew up in the deep south of Texas. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of Texas- Pan American in 2007, where she also met her husband. She began her adult life teaching high school sciences, but felt there was something missing. It was her husband that actually suggested occupational therapy as a new career path!

When Laurie is not hard at work, you can find her teaching yoga, playing golf, or watching old movies! She happens to love the glamor of old Hollywood. With Laurie’s 10 years of experience with all ages and abilities, she is ready to help you and your loved ones thrive. She is currently seeing clients in-person in the Austin, TX area and online throughout TX. She is also fluent in Spanish and has experience with hand therapy!
